There are hopes that the government will make changes to a few of its legal aid reforms after peers have expressed strong disapproval during the second reading of the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill.<\/p>\n
It has been reported in the Law Society Gazette that justice secretary Kenneth Clarke has \u2018ditched the proposal to remove legal aid for clinical negligence claims\u2019<\/em>. However, the Ministry of Justice would not confirm this only saying: \u2018That\u2019s not an announcement that we\u2019ve made and so the bill as it is, stands.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n During the eight-hour debate only three of fifty-four peers offered support to the Bill. Those who did not support the Bill described the cuts in scope as: \u2018catastrophic\u2019<\/em>, Despite defending the Bill Justice Minister Lord McNally said he would listen to the \u2018strong concerns\u2019<\/em> of those in opposition especially in regards to domestic violence, clinical negligence and advice at the police station.<\/p>\n In response to this strong criticism on the 1st<\/sup> December 2011 justice secretary Kenneth Clark announced that the Government have postponed the implementation of the legal aid reforms by six months from October 2012 to April 2013.
